Indian stainless steel producers are urging the government to impose a surtax on imports from China to protect the domestic industry. The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) claims that Chinese manufacturers benefit from unfair subsidies, distorting market conditions. They reference Canada's recent 25% surtax on similar imports as a model for India. The ISSDA warns that the influx of subsidized Chinese products threatens the viability of local producers, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which could face job losses and reduced investments due to unfair competition.
