The Indian government is currently reviewing a request to impose a temporary tax on steel imports from China, as announced by JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal. Speaking at an industry event in Bengaluru, Jindal highlighted the industry's ongoing efforts to seek protection against the influx of cheaper Chinese steel, which has negatively impacted domestic prices and company earnings. Provisional data indicates that finished steel imports into India reached a seven-year high of 5.7 million metric tons during the April-October period. The government is consulting with the user industry on this request, but no official response has been provided yet. Jindal warned that continued high imports could thin profit margins for Indian steelmakers, limiting their capacity for investment and expansion.
