An Indian delegation, including senior officials, will visit Mongolia in October to explore the import of coking coal, aiming to diversify India's raw material sources. Currently, India relies heavily on Australia for around 70-90% of its annual 56 million tonnes of coking coal, incurring high logistics costs. Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik stated the government is examining the potential for these imports. JSW Steel is also assessing the logistics of Mongolian coal, negotiating trial shipments while facing challenges in transportation routes through China or Russia. This diversification is crucial as coking coal constitutes 35-40% of steel production costs.
