The Indian government has granted JSW Steel permission to import 106,000 metric tons of low ash metallurgical (LAM) coke from Indonesia, surpassing the country-specific quantitative import restrictions set earlier this year.
The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) had originally imposed an overall import limit of 1.44 million metric tons for LAM coke in the first half of 2025, with Indonesia's quota capped at 66,364 metric tons for the January-June period. However, JSW Steel was allowed to exceed this limit as its original supply source proved unavailable, prompting the Indian authorities to permit the switch upon request.
This exemption reflects the government’s flexibility in ensuring critical raw material availability for domestic steel production while maintaining overall trade regulations.
