India's steel imports could be halved in the 2025/2026 fiscal year if the government adopts a 12% safeguard duty for 200 days, as recommended by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR). The measure, proposed following an investigation into a surge in imports of flat steel products, aims to protect the domestic steel industry and boost profitability. ICRA projects an increase in capacity utilization to 83%, driven by domestic demand growth of 7-8%. This step aligns with global trade dynamics, where restrictions on steel imports are becoming more common. The Ministry of Finance is expected to make the final decision.
