Hyundai Steel has announced a $5.8 billion investment to establish an advanced Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)-based integrated steel mill in Louisiana. The facility, set to begin operations in 2029, will have an annual production capacity of 2.7 million metric tons, focusing on high-grade steel plates for the automotive industry. The project is expected to create over 1,300 jobs and drive U.S. manufacturing growth while promoting sustainable steel production.
The plant will feature cutting-edge technologies for producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and both hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plates. As the first EAF-based integrated mill in the U.S., it will integrate all stages of production from raw materials to finished products, achieving lower carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace operations.
Strategically located near Hyundai Motor and Kia manufacturing facilities, the mill will strengthen supply chains for U.S. automakers and target markets in Latin America and Europe. Hyundai Steel plans to replicate this sustainable production model in South Korea, advancing its commitment to carbon-neutral steel production and global market competitiveness.
