Hyundai Steel is considering establishing its first overseas automotive steel mill in the United States to support Hyundai Motor Group's manufacturing plants amid anticipated protectionist policies from the incoming Trump administration. The proposed investment of approximately KRW 10 trillion (around $6.9 billion) aims to enhance local production and minimize potential tariff impacts. Locations under consideration include Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas, with a preference for New Orleans due to its logistical advantages. If approved, construction could begin in spring 2026, with completion targeted for 2029. Hyundai Steel has not yet confirmed the plan but is exploring options for global competitiveness.
