According to GMK, global steel production in March 2025 reached 166.1 million tons, marking a 14.8% increase compared to February and a 2.9% rise from the same period in 2024, according to the World Steel Association.
The CIS+Ukraine region experienced a 3.5% year-on-year decline but grew by 5.6% month-on-month to 7.1 million tons. Ukraine’s production dropped 9.9% year-on-year and 3.7% month-on-month to 550.5 thousand tons.
China led the top ten steel producers with 92.8 million tons (+4.6% y/y), followed by India at 13.8 million tons (+7%) and Japan at 7.2 million tons (+0.2%). Other major producers included the USA, Russia, South Korea, Iran, Turkey, Germany, and Brazil, with mixed performance compared to the previous year.
In the first quarter of 2025, global steel production totaled 468.6 million tons, a slight 0.4% year-on-year decrease. The CIS+Ukraine region produced 20.5 million tons, down 2.6% year-on-year, while Ukraine’s output rose 2.7% to 1.73 million tons.
In 2024, global steel production decreased by 0.9% to 1.839 billion tons. However, Ukraine’s steel production increased by 21.6% to 7.57 million tons for the year.
