Germany’s steel industry is set to become the primary consumer of imported hydrogen over the next two decades, according to the hydrogen import strategy approved by the Federal Cabinet. The strategy aims to support the decarbonization of the German economy and ensure a reliable supply of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The demand for hydrogen in Germany is projected to reach 95-130 TWh by 2030, with 50-70% of this demand likely to be met through imports. The steel sector’s demand for hydrogen is expected to grow significantly, driven by the transition to more environmentally friendly production methods, such as electric-arc furnaces and hydrogen-fueled direct-reduced iron modules.
