In October 2024, German steelmakers boosted steel production by 7.7% compared to the previous month, reaching a total of 3.22 million tons. This marks a 14.7% increase from October 2023. The rise in production was driven by a significant increase in pig iron production, which grew by 11.3% month-over-month to 2.03 million tons.

Steel production in converters saw a notable rise of 14.1% month-over-month, totaling 2.27 million tons, while production in electric arc furnaces decreased by 4.9% month-over-month but increased by 18.6% year-over-year to 947,000 tons. Additionally, rolled steel production increased by 7.4% month-over-month to 2.77 million tons.

For the period from January to October 2024, Germany’s steel production rose by 5% year-over-year to 31.58 million tons. This includes a 2.6% year-over-year increase in converter steel production to 22.23 million tons and an 11.1% year-over-year increase in electric arc furnace steel production to 9.32 million tons. Pig iron production for the same period increased by 2.3% year-over-year to 20.4 million tons, while rolled steel production rose by 3.6% year-over-year to 27.02 million tons.

Germany remains one of the top ten steel producers globally, despite a 3.9% year-over-year decline in steel production in 2023, which totaled 35.4 million tons. The country continues to adapt to changing market conditions and maintain its position in the global steel industry.
