Ferrexpo and Salzgitter have signed a memorandum of understanding for the supply of high-quality direct reduction (DR) pellets for low-carbon steel production, according to Kallanish reports. The Ukrainian mining company Ferrexpo and the German steelmaker Salzgitter have been collaborating since 2016.
Ferrexpo's DR pellets will be utilized as part of the SALCOS® programme, in which Salzgitter is incrementally converting its steel production to hydrogen-based processes and technologies aimed at reducing emissions. The agreement reinforces Ferrexpo's position as a leading supplier of high-grade iron ore pellets for the production of low-carbon steel.
"We have agreed on the terms of our cooperation for the future. Ferrexpo's DR pellets can significantly reduce emissions in steel production as part of the SALCOS® programme," stated a representative from Ferrexpo. The DR pellets can lower steel-making emissions significantly, aligning with Salzgitter's efforts to transition towards more sustainable practices.
The partnership between Ferrexpo and Salzgitter underscores the growing emphasis on decarbonization in the steel industry and the adoption of innovative technologies to reduce environmental impact. By leveraging Ferrexpo's high-quality DR pellets, Salzgitter aims to achieve its sustainability goals while maintaining efficient and cost-effective steel production.
