Sweden-based stainless steel producer Fagersta Stainless has commissioned Italian plantmaker Danieli to install a new stainless steel blooming mill at its Fagersta plant. The mill will have an annual production capacity of 70,000 tons and is scheduled to start operations by the end of 2026.
The facility will produce round bars and billets ranging from 35 to 220 mm in diameter, enhancing the plant's product mix and operational flexibility. It will support three production paths: direct processing of ingots or blooms into billets for immediate rolling at the existing wire rod mill, additional rolling via a new reversing shiftable stand, or extended processing through a continuous mill with in-line quenching and a new finishing area.
The project also includes the modernization and automation of a historic breakdown mill stand from 1943, along with the installation of six hydrogen-ready, low-emission pit furnaces. Feedstock handling will be streamlined by an automated crane with smart video monitoring, and the facility will operate using advanced process control systems.
