The European stainless flat steel market is facing downward pressure, with coil prices dropping due to weak order intake and excess supply. Several mills have reduced prices for May delivery by approximately €20-30 per tonne, reflecting ongoing market challenges.
Despite previous price increases in March, buyers have remained cautious, leading to minimal purchasing activity. Service centers and processors report that first-quarter sales volumes are similar to those of Q1 2024, but margins are under strain.
Market participants anticipate further slowdowns in April and May due to seasonal factors, including holidays in France. European mills are quoting €2,450 per tonne for stainless cold-rolled coil, while hot-rolled coil prices are approximately €130-150 per tonne lower.
The industry is focusing on inventory management to stabilize prices and maintain margins amid challenging conditions.
