European Longs Market Sluggish, but Italian Rebar May Rebound on Energy Costs

The European long steel market remained subdued in late June, with weak demand and oversupply continuing to weigh on prices. Italian rebar base prices stood at €240–250 per tonne ex-works, or €505–515 including extras—down about €10 on the lower end from the previous week.

Despite the downturn, some Italian producers anticipate a price rebound. Rising electricity costs—averaging €126/MWh in Italy compared to €57–93/MWh in other EU countries—are squeezing margins and may prompt upward adjustments.

Logistics challenges are also mounting. A severe truck shortage is delaying deliveries, while buyers are placing only punctual orders due to abundant supply and short lead times.

Wire rod prices in Italy remained stable at €620–635 per tonne delivered for drawing quality and €605–620 for mesh quality. Export prices from Greece and Spain held steady, while Turkish import offers declined to €480–490 per tonne CFR for rebar and €490–495 for wire rod.
