The European Steel Association (EUROFER) has urged policymakers to address loopholes in the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), warning that unresolved issues could undermine decarbonization efforts and harm European industry.
EUROFER highlights concerns over carbon-intensive imports, stating that the current CBAM framework fails to prevent resource shuffling and does not adequately protect EU steel exports. The association advocates for maintaining free allocation for exports, extending CBAM coverage to downstream steel products, and ensuring fair benchmarks for long and stainless steel production.
Industry leaders stress that without these adjustments, CBAM risks accelerating deindustrialization rather than supporting sustainable steelmaking in Europe.
