European steelmakers and distributors have united to call for comprehensive support for the entire steel value chain. In a joint statement, Eurofer and Eurometal emphasized the challenges faced by downstream steel-using industries, including processors and distributors, which are struggling to remain competitive.
The organizations highlighted the risks posed by a shrinking customer base in downstream sectors, which could impact the broader European industrial ecosystem. They stressed the importance of a robust manufacturing base for strategic autonomy and called for effective regulatory frameworks to address these challenges.
The European Commission’s Steel and Metals Action Plan was acknowledged as a positive step, but industry leaders urged policymakers to expand their focus to include the complete supply chain. The weakening of this supply chain threatens 13.6 million direct jobs across steel processing, intermediate suppliers, and manufacturing sectors in the EU.
