UAE-based steel producer Emsteel is set to enhance its green steel operations by integrating an electric Process-Gas Heater (e-PGH) at its direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Abu Dhabi. The project, developed in collaboration with Italian plantmaker Danieli Technologies and Tenova, a Techint Group company specializing in metals and mining solutions, utilizes Energiron technology to further reduce carbon emissions.
The newly installed equipment, incorporating direct electric-heating technology from Kanthal and Danieli, features Prothal® DH technology, designed to support the decarbonization of DRI plants and blast furnaces through an efficient, modular electrical heating system. By replacing traditional gas-fired heating methods, the innovation aims to improve sustainability in steel production while reducing environmental impact.
As part of the initiative, Emsteel and Danieli will partner with Khalifa University to study the e-PGH's effects on the DRI process and its influence on the electrical grid. This collaboration underscores Emsteel's commitment to advancing energy-efficient solutions in steelmaking while supporting broader efforts toward industrial decarbonization in the region. The project marks a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions in steel production through innovative electric-heating technologies.
