The Egyptian government has begun a safeguard investigation into hot-rolled flat steel imports following persistent calls from local manufacturers. On April 22, 2025, the Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade approved the probe into increased imports of hot-rolled steel in plate and coil form.
The investigation stems from a complaint filed in January by Egypt’s flat steel manufacturers, in accordance with Article 14 of the Executive Regulations of Law No. 161. The complaint, accepted and officially registered, aims to assess potential harm to the national economy from international trade practices. The move marks a significant step toward addressing concerns over import surges in Egypt’s steel industry.
