In 2024, China's rebar production totaled 195.058 million metric tons, marking a 13.6 percent decrease year on year, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. Domestic wire rod production reached 134.968 million metric tons, declining by 2.3 percent, while welded pipe output amounted to 60.507 million metric tons, down 7.9 percent year on year.
In December, China's rebar, wire rod, and welded pipe outputs were 16.14 million metric tons, 11.194 million metric tons, and 5.414 million metric tons, respectively. Rebar production fell by 8.8 percent year on year, while wire rod production increased by 2.8 percent and welded pipe output decreased by 2.4 percent year on year. Month on month, rebar, wire rod, and welded pipe outputs decreased by 3.61 percent, 0.38 percent, and 0.39 percent, respectively.
Rebar prices in the Chinese domestic market initially rose in December due to improved sentiments following China's announcement of a "moderately loose" monetary policy for 2025. However, prices later declined amid weak demand from downstream users. Rebar prices peaked at RMB 3,503 per metric ton on December 12 and fell to their lowest level of RMB 3,413 per metric ton during December 27-29, according to SteelOrbis data.
