Thirteen members of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) have signed a declaration urging the Canadian government to implement targeted tariffs on steel imports from China. They argue that China's excess capacity has resulted in unfair trade practices, and they stress the need for Canada to align with measures taken by the U.S. Catherine Cobden, CSPA's president, emphasized that these tariffs are crucial for maintaining a fair supply of steel across North America. The Canadian government plans to enact a 25% surtax on Chinese steel and aluminum imports, prompting China to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization.
