In August, sea freight rates for Brazilian steel imports declined, according to the Brazilian foreign trade agency, COMEX. The rates for importing slabs varied, with $52 per tonne from Russia to Rio de Janeiro, $32 from Vietnam to São Paulo, $79 from Japan to São Paulo, and $42 from China to Santa Catarina. For hot-rolled coil (HRC), the average freight rate from China to northern and northeastern regions was $51 per tonne, while cold-rolled coil (CRC) averaged $39 per tonne. Rebar rates were reported at $30 per tonne from Egypt and $21 from Turkey to Santa Catarina. Overall, the average freight rate for Brazilian steel imports fell from $53 per tonne in July to $48 per tonne in August, likely reflecting negotiations made in June.
