In a notable rebound, Austria's steel production saw an increase in May, with output reaching 650,000 tonnes. This marks a 2.7% rise from the previous month's figures. However, when compared to the same period last year, there was a 3% decrease in production. Despite this yearly dip, the overall production for the first five months of the year stood at 3.18 million tonnes, showing a slight improvement of 1% over the previous year.
The country's largest steelmaker, voestalpine, reported that market trends have remained relatively stable since the beginning of the 2024/25 business year in April. The previous fiscal year concluded with satisfactory results, particularly in overseas markets compared to Europe. Key sectors such as railway infrastructure, aerospace, and warehouse technology are expected to maintain strong demand. The automotive industry and the energy sector, which are among the main segments, are anticipated to continue their stable growth.
Despite the positive outlook, concerns were raised last year by Austria's commerce chamber regarding a significant drop in demand and orders for commodities, with no immediate signs of recovery.
