Global steel company ArcelorMittal has announced its plans to construct a modern non-grained electrical steel (NOES) plant in Calvert, Alabama, USA, with an investment of $1.2 billion. The plant, entirely owned by ArcelorMittal, will produce up to 150 kilotons per annum (ktpa) of NOES, depending on the product mix, to support industries such as automotive, mobility, renewable energy, and other industrial and commercial applications, including electric motors and generators.
Construction is set to commence in the latter half of this year, with production expected to start in 2027. The project is anticipated to create up to 1,300 jobs during the construction phase and over 200 permanent jobs for ongoing operations. This initiative aims to boost the competitiveness of US manufacturing and address a critical market need by reducing reliance on electrical steel imports through increased domestic NOES production.
John Brett, CEO of ArcelorMittal North America, emphasized the importance of establishing a resilient, sustainable domestic supply chain for this essential material.
Previously, ArcelorMittal’s Brazilian unit announced plans to invest approximately R$3.8 billion to R$4 billion ($661-696 million) in the TubarĂŁo division (EspĂrito Santo state). The project includes the construction of a new cold rolling mill and a new coating line, forming a significant part of the company’s strategic plan in Brazil, which envisions total investments of R$25 billion between 2022 and 2028.
