ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products is making significant strides in decarbonizing its logistics and restructuring its transport activities. In 2023, the division successfully delivered 20 million tonnes of steel to customers through various transportation methods, with road transport constituting approximately 38% of the total. The company is also enhancing its rail transport capabilities and exploring maritime shipping options.
ArcelorMittal has been investing in electric truck trials and evaluating the use of trucks powered by hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) across ten countries. This initiative has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional diesel-powered trucks. In 2022, a strategic partnership with Geodis at the Florange facility in eastern France resulted in the transportation of 190,000 tonnes of steel over 579,833 km using HVO trucks, saving approximately 794 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The company has also collaborated with DB Cargo in Europe for rail cargo operations, introducing a sustainable logistics solution known as DB Eco Plus. This solution assesses the energy needs for specific transport tasks and acquires the necessary volume of renewable energy, with CO2 reductions verified by auditor TÜV.
ArcelorMittal remains committed to offering comprehensive low-carbon transport solutions to support its growing XCarb® low carbon-emissions product portfolio, despite some decarbonization investments being suspended due to policy uncertainties. The company continues to advance its investments in Spain, leveraging the country’s access to clean energy sources like solar, wind, and nuclear power.
