Aço Brasil, the Brazilian steel industry group, plans to request adjustments to the country’s new tariff system aimed at controlling steel imports. Despite the implementation of a quota system and increased tariffs in June, imports surged by 24% from January to September, totaling 4.6 million metric tonnes. Aço Brasil's executive president Marco Polo de Mello Lopes expressed concerns that the measures have not effectively reduced import volumes, although they have halted their escalation. The group is particularly worried about rising imports from Egypt and Peru and is advocating for changes to better protect local producers as they prepare for a system renewal in June 2025.
