SSAB is set to invest $74 million to expand heat-treatment capacity at its Axis, Alabama mill. The project includes constructing a new building with a state-of-the-art tempering furnace and making other infrastructure improvements.
SSAB Alabama General Manager Andy Bramstedt stated that the expansion will strengthen the company’s ability to produce high-strength steel brands like Hardox and Strenx while increasing truck shipping capacity. He emphasized the company’s commitment to customers and the industry and expressed excitement about the project's benefits for the facility and the community.
Kjell Baeckman, SSAB’s head of special steel sales, highlighted that the investment will expand the mill’s capacity for niche products and allow a broader product range for customers in North and South America.
The expansion is scheduled to begin this year, with completion expected in 2027.
