The European steel sector is facing challenges in utilizing old scrap, according to Assofermet, the Italian steel trade association. As the industry anticipates an increase in old scrap from demolition grades, there is a pressing need for innovation and technology to enhance its utilization.
The sector is characterized by aging mills and electric arc furnaces (EAFs), and the procurement of high-quality scrap remains costly. To address these issues, steelmakers are investing in new shredders and advanced EAFs to improve vertical integration and reduce reliance on external suppliers. The shift towards using lower-quality demolition scrap is contingent on these technological advancements, which are crucial for the industry’s adaptation to changing market conditions.
