Germany has announced plans to decarbonize one-third of its steel industry by 2030. This initiative aims to produce approximately 12 million metric tons of carbon-free steel annually.
The announcement was made during Germany’s National Steel Summit in Duisburg, where politicians and industrial associations emphasized the importance of transitioning to green steel production.
The steel industry, which is crucial for sectors like automotive and mechanical engineering, is responsible for 7% of Germany’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
To achieve the decarbonization goals, the industry will rely on new technologies and renewable energy sources, such as hydrogen. The German government has committed significant financial support for large-scale renewable energy projects to aid this transition.
However, the industry faces challenges, including a weak economy, high energy prices, and competition from cheaper imports.
To address these issues, industry leaders and unions have called for a stable investment environment and competitive energy prices to ensure the success of the green transition.
