Demand for Low-Carbon Steel Drives Decarbonization Efforts in Mills

The steel industry is facing a pivotal moment as the demand for low-carbon steel is prompting steel mills to accelerate their decarbonization initiatives. Frederik Leus from ArcelorMittal's Xcarb Business Development highlighted this trend at the International Iron Ore and Green Steel Summit in Vienna.

He pointed out that while the industry is navigating the transition to net-zero carbon steel products, it must also consider the diverse demands of downstream sectors. ArcelorMittal is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is taking a multifaceted approach to decarbonization.

This includes increasing the use of recycled steel and scrap, employing direct-reduction iron in electric-arc furnaces, and integrating carbon capture and storage or reuse (CCUS) technologies. The Xcarb brand is leading the way with a range of low-carbon flat steel products, setting a precedent for the future use of direct-reduced iron (DRI) and supporting the industry's sustainability goals.
