The Dutch government and India's Tata Steel are on the verge of finalizing a binding agreement to transition to low-carbon steelmaking at Tata Steel's Ijmuiden mill in the Netherlands. The deal, expected to be concluded in the current financial year, will see the implementation of a decarbonization strategy involving the replacement of one blast furnace before 2030, followed by the second one.
The first phase of the plan includes transitioning to green steel production by 2030 through the direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF) route, with the DRI initially operating on natural gas and later transitioning to hydrogen. Discussions with the Dutch government are focused on securing financial and policy-level support for this significant shift towards sustainable steel production.
