German steelmakers increased steel production by 2.7% year-on-year in April 2024, reaching 3.28 million tons, according to the German steel association WV Stahl. However, compared to the previous month, the figure fell by 6.5%.Steel production in converters for the month rose by 1.5% year-on-year to 2.29 million tons but decreased by 5.4% month-on-month. Electric arc furnace (EAF) production increased by 5.5% year-on-year to 988,000 tons but fell by 9.3% from March.
Pig iron production saw a 1.2% year-on-year increase to 2.09 million tons but a 6% month-on-month decline. Germany produced 2.73 million tons of rolled steel products, down 0.1% year-on-year and 9.3% from the previous month.
In the January-April period, Germany's steel production rose by 5.1% year-on-year to 12.99 million tons. Converter steel production increased by 3.8% to 9.07 million tons, while EAF production grew by 8.4% to 3.92 million tons. Pig iron production increased by 3.9% to 8.4 million tons, and rolled steel production was up 3.7% to 11.3 million tons.
As previously reported, Germany is among the world's ten largest steel producers. In 2023, the country's steel production decreased by 3.9% year-on-year to 35.4 million tons, ranking 8th globally. Converter steel production fell by 0.9% to 25.63 million tons, and EAF production declined by 10.8% to 9.81 million tons. Pig iron production decreased by 0.9% to 23.63 million tons, while rolled steel output amounted to 30.64 million tons, down 3.6% year-on-year.
