Meranti Green Steel has reserved the site for its Thai direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace (DRI-EAF) steelworks in the IRPC industrial estate in Rayong.
The company plans to commission the steelworks in 2027, aiming to produce green hot-rolled coil (HRC) for domestic and export markets.
The DRI plant in this project will initially use natural gas and will feed an EAF, continuous caster, and hot strip mill with a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per year.
In addition to the captive DRI plant, Meranti will ship hot-briquetted iron feedstock from its joint venture in Western Australia. The DRI plant will transition to consume green hydrogen when available, and the entire plant will use only renewable energy through a virtual power purchase agreement, allowing it to become carbon neutral.
Meranti has been working with Danieli to refine the plant layout and engineering development at the IRPC site in recent months ahead of detailed planning. The company has also launched cooperation with IRPC, BIG, GPSC, and other site partners for the project.
