Brazil's foreign trade secretariat reported today that the country's importers have fulfilled nearly 264,000 metric tons of steel quotas as of July 30, 2025, marking an increase of 4,000 tons from the previous week. This update comes after the government extended its quota regime through June 2026, which also expanded the range of steel products covered and tightened the conditions by reducing the volumes eligible for lower tariffs. This policy is part of a broader effort to manage the influx of steel imports and protect the domestic industry. The trade measure is designed to address a global overcapacity issue, which has been a persistent challenge for the steel industry, with the OECD estimating global overcapacity at 553 million tonnes in a previous report. The extension of these quotas reflects a continued focus on safeguarding local steel producers from market distortions caused by global excess capacity.
