Panelists emphasized that sustainability goes beyond emissions, encompassing water reuse, renewable energy, and scrap utilization. However, the lack of a common standard is creating confusion in the market. Some experts argued that only physically reduced COâ‚‚ emissions should count, rejecting mass balance accounting methods.
The discussion also highlighted the need for alignment across global markets, as other regions like India have already introduced quantifiable definitions. Until Europe establishes a clear benchmark, the green steel label remains more aspirational than standardized.
