India’s nearly defunct state-run Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Ltd (VISL) is set to be revived as a producer of specialty steel for critical sectors like defence and aerospace, announced Steel Ministry Secretary Sandeep Poundrik on Thursday. The government is exploring the feasibility of transforming the plant, previously earmarked for closure, into a strategic manufacturing hub.
Poundrik stated that the ministry will conduct a detailed study to assess the viability of specialty steel production at VISL before finalizing investment plans. "We are examining all options and will decide based on the feasibility report," he said. No estimated investment figures have been determined yet.
In addition, the ministry is focusing on reviving another struggling unit, SAIL’s Salem Steel Plant, which is currently operating below its 0.35 million mt annual capacity. Poundrik emphasized the need to maximize Salem’s output before considering expansion. The moves align with India’s push to strengthen domestic steel production for high-value industries
