The Bulgarian government has approved a derogation from EU sanctions on Russia, allowing the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant to import specific iron and steel products from Russian suppliers. Officials cite technical and nuclear safety requirements as the primary reason for the exemption.
The Kozloduy plant, Bulgaria’s largest electricity producer, relies on components originally designed and manufactured in Russia. The government emphasized that maintaining uninterrupted electricity generation and safe operations necessitates continued access to Russian steel and iron.
Industry analysts note that this decision reflects practical energy security concerns, despite broader EU restrictions on Russian imports.
