US President Donald Trump has directed the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to conduct a fresh review of Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel's bid to acquire US Steel, as announced by the White House. The confidential review will assess potential national security risks associated with the transaction and allow the involved parties to address any concerns. This move aims to help Trump decide on further actions regarding the matter.
Previously, a lawsuit filed in January accused former US President Joe Biden of influencing CFIUS to favor his political agenda, allegedly resulting in an unfair process that denied Nippon Steel and US Steel a fair evaluation of their bid.
