Egyptian rebar has cleared customs at the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, using a product code under a different EU quota category, according to documentation obtained by Argus. The shipment was registered under HS code 722830, designated for hot-rolled bar instead of rebar. This category, which falls under "non-alloy and other alloy merchant bars and light sections," currently has no import restrictions for Egyptian material. Market participants estimated that 80,000 tonnes of Egyptian rebar were awaiting clearance at EU ports as of April 1, but only about 30,000 tonnes cleared under the rebar quota on the first day. This strategic maneuver has highlighted increasing efforts to navigate EU safeguards as they tighten.
