The Argentine steel chamber, Acero Argentino (AA), has expressed its concerns about the 25 percent import tariff imposed by the US on all origins of steel products.

AA acknowledges the need for protective measures against unfair competition from China, the world's leading steel producer, which holds 54 percent of crude steel and 51 percent of finished steel production. However, AA argues that a coordinated solution is necessary. Argentina, responsible for only 0.2 percent of global steel production, is a reliable supplier with strong ties to the US steel industry, as the US relies on Argentine steel products as raw materials.

Since 2018, under section 232, Argentina has adhered to its annual quota of 180,000 mt of steel products. Despite a historical commercial deficit with the US, except for 2024 due to a deep recession, AA believes that government-level negotiations could reverse the import tariff for the mutual benefit of both economies.
